Things to know as a first time hockey parent

Registration

  • Before registering your child (if they have never played hockey) you must contact the TriPort Administrator at triportmha@gmail.com to obtain a Hockey Canada Registration number (HCR#) for your player, providing the following:
    • Players first and last name
    • Date of Birth
    • Residential address
    • Primary email
    • Primary phone number
  • Once you receive the HCR# you will register through TeamLinkt (TriPort Hockey Registration)
  • Players can do a 5 ice session trial for $75.00 before committing to the season. Contact the Triport Administrator to let them know that you would like to do the trial first.
  • Player registration fees can be paid in full by September 15 or in 3 installments due Sept 15, Oct 15, Nov 15. This excludes the Competitive tryouts and the 5 time trial, in which fees are due before a player can step on the ice.
  • There is no rule that players must be able to skate before starting hockey, but it is highly recommended that players should have some skating ability. Unfortunately, coaches usually have a limited amount of help on the ice, and it's unfair to the coaches and other players when coaches are teaching players to skate rather than the fundamentals of hockey.

If your child does need a bit more assistance getting started, we encourage you and welcome you on the ice with them to give them that extra support.  You will be required to take the Respect in Sport - Activity leader and complete a Criminal Record Check to participate on the ice as an On-Ice Helper.
  • Players will practice twice a week with a game most weekends starting after Thanksgiving, with the younger division (U7) starting after Remembrance Day.

Gear

  • Players gear fitting properly is crucial for the safety of your player but also comfort. Below are some equipment fitting links to help you.  If you still feel you need some help or can’t find the required gear you can contact our Equipment Coordinator who will be more than happy to help you.
  • All gear must be worn at all times or be in good condition in order to be allowed on the ice.  Neck guards continue to be forgotten at all age divisions.

Hockey Stick Length Guide

  • TriPort Minor Hockey has a Gear Swap each season.  This is typically scheduled in September. This is perfect for parents with players just starting out that may be concerned about the cost of purchasing brand new gear for their player who might not like hockey after they start. But also a place where parents can exchange gear that is too small for their players for something that fits.

Parent RIS

  • Parent RIS - BC Hockey requires each player to have one parent complete the Respect in Sport Parent certification, regardless of whether a parent has attained Respect in Sport - Activity Leader.  We ask that this be completed prior to players participating on any on-ice activities. Any players that have not had one parent complete Parent RIS by October 31 will be deemed ineligible from any hockey activities. Please see “Parent RIS” under registration on the TriPort MHA website for links and more information.

Volunteering

  • Volunteering for your players team is expected. There are many duties that need to be shared amongst the parents on the team in order for the season to be successful. Your manager will schedule parents for practices, games and tournaments.
  • If you are unable to do your scheduled shift, it is your responsibility to switch a shift with another parent for a later date.  It is not up to the manager to find your replacement. Ignoring your scheduled shift or refusing is not an option.
  • If you are uncomfortable with any scheduled duty, it is your responsibility to get training on it before their scheduled day or to switch someone with another duty that day.
  • Parent Volunteer positions:
    • Timekeepers (for scheduled games)
    • Electronic score sheet (U11-U18)
    • Safety Parents (see Safety Parents below)
    • Music
    • 50/50
    • Dressing Room Parents
    • Team Tournament Committee (2-3)
    • Jersey Parent (usually U7 & U9)
  • Safety Parents - All parents are encouraged to take the safety course to ensure that someone is always available at each practice and game.

IMPORTANT!!! No dryland, practice or game shall proceed without a certified safety parent, and should be cancelled if no one is available.

It is crucial that each team has a minimum of 5 safety parents, but more is welcomed.  The 5 main safety parents will be rostered to the team roster and will be used for games and tourneys. These 5 parents should be parents that will be attending most or all games.  Any other safety parents can help fill in the practice safety times, but cannot be used in any games.

Anyone interested in becoming a Safety Person for their team should contact their team manager or visit the www.triporthockey.ca website for more information.

  • Hockey Canada has a very strict Dressing Room policy. Players are to be supervised by 2 adults at all times. At the older ages, supervision can occur without directly entering the dressing room as long as both supervisors are within hearing distance of the dressing room.   This usually means having both supervisors outside of the dressing room doorway.    A lone personnel member should never be in the dressing room with players at any time, especially when they are showering or changing.   Two adults should be present together, which is called the “Two Deep Method” of supervision. Should separate dressing rooms be required, both dressing rooms require the appropriate adult supervision.
  • Volunteering also includes assistance in behind the scenes organization. When your team’s manager asks questions, or is requesting roster game attendance numbers, please ensure you respond via your TeamLinkt or email in a timely fashion. This ensures the team manager is prepped with the information they need to succeed in their volunteer position.

Fundraising

  • Fundraising is an important part of ensuring kids can play hockey now and in the future. There will be 2-3 fundraising initiatives throughout the season in which you will be responsible for selling/distributing what will be sold/advertised such as: 50/50 cash draws, meat fundraisers, bottle drive collection, etc. The team manager will give ample notice and time to allow you to participate.

Tournaments

  • Each team participates in tournaments each season, both at home and away. The amount of away tournaments is determined on how many tournaments the parents would like to attend.  On average, most teams will participate in 2-3 away tournaments per season, but can be more or less depending on the team.  Teams will usually poll the families early in the season to see what interest there is for the away tournaments prior to applying.  Away tournaments are not mandatory.

  • Each recreational division (U7-U18) will host a TriPort home tournament. Both the Port Hardy and Port McNeill age division will host this together, at the arena scheduled by the ice scheduler.

Both teams will share the responsibilities of planning the tournament and the volunteer shifts equally, regardless of which arena the tournament is hosted at.
